Asylum Seekers - Move-On process

The "move-on period" in the UK is the critical transition phase after you receive refugee status.

The legal timeframe for this transition is 42 days (6 weeks) from the date of your grant letter.

However, you are guaranteed a minimum of 28 days' notice from the day you receive your asylum support discontinuation letter.

During this time you will be asked to leave your Home Office-provided asylum accommodation. DO NOT leave your asylum accommodation until you have until you have a place to move to.

The move-on period is a very busy time to get your affairs in order.

To prepare for independent living, the most important immediate steps include:

• Request an eVisa/Biometric Residents Permit (BRP): Ensure your UKVI account is set up so you can access your eVisa and prove your status.
• Prepare your documents and personal information for your household. You will need: Passport, E-visas. National Insurance Number and proof of address (secure your documents and personal information and only share with trusted organisations)
• Seek local support: Reach out to Migrant Help, Citizens Advice or Wyre Forest Welcomes refugee to help navigate the benefits system, open a bank account, and prepare for independent living.
• Open a UK bank account
• Apply for Universal Credit: Start your welfare benefits application as soon as possible, as it takes time to be processed. Universal Credit: How to claim - GOV.UK
• Find accommodation:  Register for housing or approach the council Housing Advice Team for assistance.

It is important to understand that there is a long waiting list for social housing within Wyre Forest District Council. You may be placed in temporary accommodation while you wait.  There are private sector housing options that you can explore. More information on housing in Wyre Forest
