Council tax discount for carers and care workers
Carers can be disregarded for council tax purposes if they are providing care and/or support to one or more people and fall into one of two groups.
Discount for care workers
For the purposes of council tax, a care worker is a person who is employed to provide care for someone by a charity or local authority and a carer is unpaid.
If you are a care worker you may be eligible for a Council Tax discount if the following applies:
- You provide support or care for another resident who lives at the same address as you.
- You are employed to care for this person by a charity, or local authority, and they introduced you to the person requiring care.
- You earn less than £44 per week.
- You work for at least 24 hours a week.
- You are a resident at the place where you deliver care.

Discount for carers
If you are a carer, you may be eligible for a Council Tax discount if the following applies:
- You provide care for someone who lives with you.
- You provide care for someone for at least 35 hours a week.
- You are not the partner of the person you care for.
- You are not the parent of the person you care for, if the person cared for is under 18.
The person you care for must be entitled to one of the following:
- Any rate of Attendance Allowance.
- The middle or highest rate of the care component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
- Any rate of the daily living activity component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
- An increase in their disablement pension.
- An increase in Constant Attendance Allowance.
- Armed Forces Independent Payment.

You will need to provide evidence of benefit entitlement for the person you care for, this can be uploaded to the form as a pdf document or pictures of your award letter.
