What is medical hygiene waste and what can't go in the bin
Medical hygiene waste is produced by a non-infectious person with a medical need and includes:
- Medical items of disposable equipment such as gowns, gloves, plaster casts,
- Colostomy/stoma bags, catheter bags and urine bottles,
- Giving sets and feeding tubes,
- Human waste (faeces), incontinence pads, bed and chair pads, nasal secretions, sputum, urine, disposable bed pans and liners, vomit and soiled human bedding.
Wherever possible items should be emptied before being bagged and put in your bin.
What can't go in your medical waste bin
- Clinical, medicinal, hazardous or infectious wastes or sharp items such as needles cannot be put in the medical hygiene waste bin, speak to your medical provider for disposal of these items. This includes any wastes deriving from a person receiving chemotherapy/radiotherapy treatments.
- Normal sanitary product waste, nappies, or pet waste, this should be double bagged and put in your black bin.
It is recommended that all medical hygiene waste products are double-bagged and tied before placing in the bin.
Packaging, what can I recycle?
Cardboard and rigid plastic packaging can be recycled through your green wheelie bin. Full details of what can be recycled can be found on our what goes in which bin webpage.
More information on recycling Nutricia plastics is available on the Nutricia website.
We are unable to recycle PVC and Polystyrene; these should be put in your black rubbish bin.
If you require an additional green recycling bin this can be ordered at the same time as your medical bin.
How do I apply for the service?
You can one using our My Wyre Forest online portal or app, or by calling Operational Services on 01562 732928. You will be asked to sign to confirm your need for medical hygiene waste removal. Assisted collection (special collection point)
