Stone Parish Council

This long narrow parish includes the village of Stone, situated 2 miles south east of Kidderminster, and hamlet of Shenstone. It is a pleasant parish with farmland interspersed with belts of attractive woodland. Stone itself is a small village on the Kidderminster to Bromsgrove road, a place sheltered by woods and with several orchards close by.

The parish church of St. Mary consists of a chancel, nave with a western gallery and western tower and spire. The church was rebuilt in 1831 when the old church was destroyed.

Stone Parish has three licensed public houses, The Hare & Hounds, The Plough Inn and the Stone Manor Hotel.

At the 2001 census Stone Parish had a population of 782.

Stone Parish’s most famous son is Peter John Collins (6 November 1931 – 3 August 1958) who was a British racing driver from England. Debuting on 18 May 1952, he participated in 35 World Championship Grands Prix, winning three races with nine podiums, and scored a total of 47 championship points
He grew up in Mustow Green, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England. The son of a motor garage owner and haulage merchant, Collins became interested in motor vehicles at a young age. He was expelled from school at 16 due to spending time at a local fairground during school hours. He became an apprentice in his father's garage and began competing in local trials races.
Peter had a fatal accident during the 1958 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. Peter is buried in St Marys Churchyard Stone and his grave is still visited by adoring fans from all over the world of motor racing today.
