What is custom and self build?

Custom and Self-Build housing currently makes up 8% of the UK’s Housing stock but it is becoming increasingly popular. The main differences between custom and self-build are:

Custom build

This is where someone buys a serviced plot of land and contracts with a builder/developer to build out a house build type to their specification. There are a huge variety of products and options available, including full turn key custom build and self finish custom build to name a few. There are links to companies who can help you with this options, later in the guide.

Self build

Refers to where an individual finds their own plot of land, and manages the full build process either on their own or with the help of a project manager.
