Changing rooms, changing use

News release issued:

Work to demolish a disused changing room on a playing field are underway.

Wyre Forest District Council is removing the changing rooms at Spennells playing fields in Kidderminster. The facilities have not been used for many years. The land is owned by Wyre Forest District Council and it is proposing to transfer the ownership (on a 99 year lease) to 9th Wyre Forest (Spennells) Scout Group. The scouts are planning to build a new scout hut there which will also be used as a community hub.

The transfer of land will be part of the council’s localism agenda. This is when the authority supports Town and Parish councils as well as other community organisations to take ownership of assets or to run services.

Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Arts and Community Safety said,

“The demolition work is the first step towards opening up opportunities for a new use for the land. As part of our localism agenda we’re proposing to transfer ownership to the scouts. This will give them the chance to build a new base and offer another facility to benefit the local community.”

Nicki Hitchcock, Scout Group Leader said,

“9th Wyre Forest (Spennells) Scout Group is excited to see this first step towards a new facility both for ourselves and the community on Spennells. Once the site is clear we can step up our fundraising campaign.”
