Chairman to raise the flag for Merchant Navy Day
News release issued:
A special event to highlight the UK’s Merchant Navy seafarers will take place at Wyre Forest District Council’s headquarters on Friday 2 September.
Members of the public are invited to join service organisations to commemorate Merchant Navy Day at the flag-flying ceremony at Wyre Forest House, Finepoint Way, off Stourport Road, Kidderminster. The ceremony will start at 10.30am.
The official Merchant Navy Day is Saturday 3 September. It honours and remembers the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but hard-working Merchant Navy seafarers, who kept Britain afloat during both World War. It also celebrates the dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers who are said to be responsible for more than 90 per cent of the UK’s imports.
Council Chairman Councillor Peter Dyke will raise the flag. He said:
“It's important that we recognise the sacrifices and dedication of those brave and selfless people within the Merchant Navy community, past and present. It is my honour to attend the flag-raising event and we hope to see residents come out to show their support.”
