Extension to Bewdley's Conservation Area to be discussed

Maypole Piece, a grassy hillside in Wribbenhall, Bewdley could become part of town’s Conservation Area under new proposals. The move follows strong support from residents who highlighted the site's contribution to the town's historic landscape and character during a consultation on the draft Bewdley Conservation Area Character Appraisal earlier this year.
Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet will be discussing the Draft Appraisal at its meeting on Wednesday 16 September. They look set to carry out a further consultation on the inclusion of Maypole Piece. If agreed residents will be able to comment on the proposed change to the boundary of the Bewdley Conservation Area that would see the whole of Maypole Piece included within the designation.
The four-week consultation would run from Monday 21 September to Sunday 18 October 2026.
During the first consultation, many respondents highlighted the importance of Maypole Piece and called for the entire site to be included within the Conservation Area. Following a detailed assessment, conservation officers consider that Maypole Piece makes a direct contribution to the special architectural and historic interest of the Conservation Area.
Maypole Piece forms part of the historic valley-side landscape that helps shape Bewdley's distinctive character. It is a prominent feature in views into and out of the town and plays an important role in the historic setting of both Bewdley and Wribbenhall.
Councillor Dan Morehead, Wyre Forest District Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Planning and the Green Agenda, said:
"Earlier this year we received a wide range of feedback on the draft Character Appraisal, with many people highlighting the importance of Maypole Piece to Bewdley's history, landscape and identity.
"Having carefully considered those representations, we are now planning to consult on a proposed boundary change to include the whole of Maypole Piece within the Conservation Area.
"This is an opportunity for residents, local organisations and anyone with an interest in Bewdley's heritage to have their say before a final decision is made."
The Bewdley Conservation Area Character Appraisal has been updated to reflect changes that have taken place since the current appraisal was published, including restoration projects, flood defence works and updated national heritage guidance.
The previous consultation attracted 25 responses from residents, local organisations and statutory consultees. Feedback was generally supportive of the updated appraisal and helped shape a number of proposed amendments to the document.
The consultation will be available on the council’s website.
The final Bewdley Conservation Area Character Appraisal and proposed boundary amendment will be considered by Cabinet later this year.
