Council tax discount for Special Constables in Wyre Forest
News release issued:
Special Constables living in Wyre Forest are set to receive a 25% discount on their council tax in recognition of the time they give to helping keep local communities safe.
Wyre Forest District Council is introducing the new scheme with funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia.
Under the scheme, Special Constables who volunteer more than 200 hours each year will be eligible for a 25% reduction in their council tax bill.
Special Constables are volunteer police officers who give up their own time to support regular officers. Their work can include helping to prevent crime, reassuring communities and responding to incidents.
Councillor David Ross, Cabinet Member for Finance and Capital Portfolio said:
“Special Constables give up their own time to help keep our communities safe, and we want to recognise the valuable contribution they make.
“This 25% council tax discount is a practical way of showing our support. Importantly, the scheme will be funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia, meaning we can offer this recognition without the cost falling on other council taxpayers.
“I hope it shows our Special Constables that the work they do for communities across Wyre Forest is valued and appreciated.”
The initiative forms part of a wider scheme to recognise Special Constables across the West Mercia area.
Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said:
“I am grateful to Wyre Forest District Council for supporting a scheme that gives back to the Special Constables who play such an important role in keeping our communities safe. Their dedication, professionalism and commitment deserve to be recognised.
“The council’s support demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved when local partners work together to champion those who volunteer their time to public service. It’s great to see both Wyre Forest and Telford & Wrekin Councils supporting the scheme, and I hope this is the start of even wider recognition across West Mercia for the valuable contribution our Special Constables make.”
The scheme starts in April 2027. Eligible Special Constables won’t need to apply for the discount, it will be added to their council tax account automatically.
