Funding boost paves the way for a fresh future for Kidderminster’s Museum of Carpet

A new chapter could be about to begin for Kidderminster’s Museum of Carpet, as Wyre Forest District Council proposes targeted funding to help secure its long‑term future.
The museum – the UK’s only institution dedicated to the heritage and craft of carpet making – announced before Christmas that it would be closing its doors following significant financial challenges, including rising costs and falling footfall. But thanks to the determination of trustees and volunteers, it has been able to reopen during February half term while discussions about a sustainable future continue.
As part of its 2026–2029 budget proposals, the Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet is recommending a one‑off transformation grant of £25,000 a year for two years to support the development of a new business model for the museum. The funding aims to help the Museum of Carpet evolve into a strengthened heritage organisation with a secure future.
Councillor Ian Hardiman, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Arts and Community safety said:
“While the council remains unable to offer ongoing financial support, we are pleased to be able to recommend this targeted transformation funding. It will help the museum explore a more sustainable way forward and protect a vital piece of our heritage. We’d encourage the Museum to continue discussions with Kidderminster Town Council about the possibility of ongoing funding for a future transformed operational model.”

We look forward to working closely with the council as we develop a new business model that keeps our story alive for generations to come.”
The museum, which opened in 2012 at Stour Vale Mill, houses unique collections, archive records and working machinery that chart the town’s proud role in the carpet industry.
The funding recommendation will be considered by Cabinet on Wednesday 11 February as part of the wider Medium‑Term Financial Strategy. The meeting starts at 5.30pm and will be webcast. It can be viewed on our streaming webpage . The proposals will then be considered by Full Council at its meeting on Wednesday 25 February.
