Council to Explore Other Regeneration Options for Bridge Street, Stourport

News release issued:

Wyre Forest District Council is continuing to assess regeneration options for the Bridge Street site in Stourport-on-Severn, following the closure of the recent opportunity for community-led proposals.

The land, which is owned by the Council and formerly used as a temporary car park, had been made available for development proposals from community organisations.

The Bridge Street site was designated as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) at the request of the Stourport Civic Society, in order to ensure that any potential sale of the land would give the community an opportunity to bid for it. This designation reflects the community’s ambition to shape the site’s future and forms part of a broader vision to redevelop the area—creating a stronger link between Stourport’s town centre and its historic canal basins, and in turn supporting tourism and local businesses. A deadline of 12 August 2025 was set for bids to be submitted. However, no proposals were received during the application period.

Councillor Dan Morehead, Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Planning and the Green Agenda, said:

“We are disappointed that no community-led schemes came forward for the Bridge Street site. However, this presents a renewed opportunity for private sector developers to step up and help deliver a high-quality scheme that enhances the town’s unique setting, particularly around the canal basins."

“Our vision for this site is to create a vibrant, connected area with uses that attract both residents and visitors. We know Stourport has strong potential and we want to unlock that as part of our wider regeneration ambitions.”

While the Council remains committed to seeing the site regenerated, limited availability of Government funding means any future development is more likely to come through commercial investment. The Council continues to welcome dialogue with interested developers who share its ambition to bring new life to this important town centre location.
