New Chairman at Wyre Forest District Council

News release issued:

The former lead singer of a 60s band is taking over as Chairman of Wyre Forest District Council.

Councillor John Byng, who represents Wribbenhall and Arley ward was sworn in as Chairman of the Council at the full Council meeting last night (Wednesday 15 May.)

Originally from Bromsgrove, Councillor Byng moved to the district when he met his wife who has always lived in Wyre Forest. He also credits her with introducing him into politics. She was the assistant town clerk at Bewdley Town Council, and in 2017 he successfully stood for election in the Wribbenhall ward. He was mayor of Bewdley in 2019-2020.

The retired industry accountant was a professional musician before he entered the corporate world. He was lead singer with the band, The Flamingos, supporting groups like the Animals, the Kinks and Small Faces and played at Kidderminster Town Hall.

Councillor Byng’s singing days are over, but he still loves music. He has a growing vinyl collection and particularly enjoys soul music, and it is also looking like his grandchildren may enter the industry. He also enjoys cricket and football.

As the Chairman, Councillor Byng will represent the district at a wide range of functions across the district, including community and charity events and formal openings. He will also chair council meetings and work throughout the year to raise money for charity.

He said:

“This is a huge honour for me, and I am very thankful.  I’m looking forward to attending as many events as I can, to meet residents and when travelling outside of the area to highlight our wonderful district which we are lucky to call home.”

Councillor Byng’s chosen charity is The British Heart Foundation. Organisations that would like advice on inviting the Chairman to attend an event should contact eso@wyreforestdc.gov.uk

Councillor Paul Harrison, who also represents Wribbenhall and Arley, will be Vice Chairman for the municipal year.

Councillor Byng takes over from outgoing Chairman, Councillor Chris Rogers.
