Chairman to raise the flag for Merchant Navy Day

News release issued:

A special event to highlight the UK’s Merchant Navy seafarers will take place at Wyre Forest District Council’s headquarters on Tuesday 3 September.

Members of the public are invited to join service organisations to commemorate Merchant Navy Day at the flag-flying ceremony at Wyre Forest House, Finepoint Way, Kidderminster. The ceremony will start with a formal welcome from Chairman of Wyre Forest District Council, Councillor John Byng, at 9.45am. The Chairman, who will be joined by standard bearers, will then raise the flag.

Merchant Navy Day honours and remembers the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but hard-working Merchant Navy seafarers, who kept Britain afloat during both World War. It also celebrates the dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers who are said to be responsible for more than 90 per cent of the UK’s imports.

Chairman of the Council, Councillor John Byng said,

“We must acknowledge the sacrifices and commitment of the courageous and selfless individuals in the Merchant Navy community, both past and present. It is a privilege to attend the flag-raising ceremony, and we encourage residents to join us in showing their support.”
