Top tips for your virtual interview
Your equipment:
- Try to use a PC or laptop rather than your smartphone
- Test your equipment before your interview
- Avoid unnecessary distractions from your device – you may want to turn off e-mail notifications and silence any other reminders
Your surroundings:
- Set up your virtual interview somewhere quiet and free from distractions
- Check that your chosen spot has a good internet connection
- Make sure everything you need for your interview is within easy reach
Your interview:
- Be prepared – as with a face to face interview it is important to do your research before your interview
- Dress as you would do if it were a face to face interview – you will look professional on your video call and it will help put you in the right frame of mind
- Do your best to look directly at the camera rather than at the image on your screen – this will maintain virtual eye contact
- Try to relax and let your personality shine though – let the interviewer see why you would be a great asset to their team
- Ask for feedback – this will always help you to hone your interview skills for the future, either for face to face or virtual interviews.
Finally:
- Don’t panic if technology begins to fail, just do your best to reconnect
- Do join your interview 10 or 15 minutes before it is due to start – it will give you time to make sure you are successfully connected, and you’ll have a much calmer start to your interview
Good luck!
