Temporary accommodation boost for Wyre Forest

News release issued:

The building of more homes to help people needing short-term accommodation in the district has moved a step closer after Wyre Forest District Council signed a contract with construction partners, Stepnell.

The council has entered into a pre-construction services agreement with Stepnell for a three-storey residential building at the corner of Castle Road and New Road in Kidderminster.

The building will include 20 ensuite accommodation units along with office space, associated car parking and landscaping. There would also be a shared kitchen diner and lounge area on each floor and an outside space for residents.

Kate Bailey, Head of Strategic Growth at Wyre Forest District Council said:

“We are seeing an increasing number of people coming to us in need of temporary accommodation. These new units will help them while we work with them to secure a more permanent home. It’s a good investment for taxpayers too. This is because if we don’t have enough short-term accommodation space, we have to use more expensive commercial options.”

Kate added:

“We are delighted to be working with Stepnell on this project. The company has experience of working on residential projects and we look forward to progressing the project with them, supported by our project managers PSP.”

Planning permission for the building was granted in 2022. It will be built on the site of the former council owned Castle Road car park.

Adrian Barnes, Regional Director from Stepnell said:

“We are delighted to be working with Wyre Forest District Council, PSP and WT Partnership on this fantastic scheme to construct a new accommodation building, which will house up to 20 people and offer them a secure temporary home. We are working closely with the client, their professional team and key stakeholders to ensure the project is efficient and look forward to commencing on site later this year."

Patrick Hickey, Associate Director from PSP said:

“Wyre Forest District Council’s innovative approach has enabled this much-needed project to be brought forward. The appointment of leading construction partner Stepnell is a significant milestone in the delivery of new short-term accommodation, providing a home for people in emergency need while being supported to find long term accommodation.

Adopting a collaborative approach between all parties will assist with the project being delivered on time and on budget. PSP partners with councils and housing associations across the country to deliver all types of housing and real estates assets.”

It is hoped work will start on site during summer 2023 with completion in mid to late 2024.
