Council warns against festive flytipping

News release issued:

Residents are being reminded to dispose of their Christmas waste responsibly – and not run the risk of starting off 2021 with a fine!

The festive period can create a lot of additional waste with extra packaging from gifts, new furniture and general clear-outs as we make space for new items. For many residents this means an extra trip to the local household recycling centre.

Worcestershire County Council has confirmed that their household recycling centres in the district will be closed for three days; Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

If you need to visit the tip, avoid these three days and do not leave items outside the gates if the centre is closed as this is classed as flytipping.

Last year, one flytipper was fined £600 after they dumped items outside the locked gates of Hoobrook household recycling centre in Kidderminster on Boxing Day.

Information on tip opening times and restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic can be found on the county council’s website.

Councillor Helen Dyke, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Community Protection said: “We understand you may have more rubbish than normal during the festive period. If you want to a visit a tip, please check they are open and remember to book an appointment in advance for Hoobrook household recycling centre.

“Last Christmas, eleven acts of flytipping took place outside the closed gates of tips in the district. Our enforcement team worked swiftly to make sure the flytippers were identified and issued with fines.

“As part of our work to combat flytipping, we are running a SCRAP Flytipping campaign. Help us keep the district a safe, clean and green living environment by reporting incidents of littering or dumping rubbish to us straight away by visiting our flytipping page.”

Seasonal tips and information on reducing, reusing and recycling waste can also be found online by visiting Worcestershire County Council's Let's Waste Less and Recycle website pages.

The majority of Wyre Forest residents will have their bins collected as usual over the festive period. Only residents who have Friday collections will be affected by changes.

Householders whose bin would have been due for collection on Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) are asked to put it out by 6am on Monday 21 December. And for those residents whose black bin would have been due to be emptied on Friday 1 January, this will now be done on Monday 28 December. All other bin collections will take place as usual.
