Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI)

If you are claiming Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance and you are a homeowner, your benefit may include SMI.

You will only get help towards mortgage interest payments for a mortgage or loan to buy or improve your home. SMI is normally paid directly to your lender. There is no guarantee that you will get SMI for a loan you take out.

No help can be provided towards housing costs such as payments of capital owed on a loan, insurance premiums or mortgage arrears.  Further details on SMI can be found at the Government's public services website.

If you would like some further information or advice regarding the above, please contact the Housing Services Team directly on 01562 732563.
