Riverside conservation area

This site is located at grid reference SO 81496 70498 (DY13 9NZ).

Riverside Conservation Area is a spectacular example of how an amenity area can be developed into much more with assistance from a strong volunteer group working together with Wyre Forest District Council; it is situated in Stourport adjacent to Britannia Gardens. Riverside conservation area is approximately 3 hectares (8 acres) in size and consists of a variety of habitats including open water, immature dry broadleaf woodland, grassland and most importantly an extensive phragmites reed bed, which has supported winter murmurations of starling.

The pool is man made and was constructed in 1999 by the developer of the estate and has since developed into a site that is fast becoming important from a biodiversity perspective. This site already supports a variety of birdlife including the all important overwintering starling populations, reed and willow warbler as well as kingfishers. Grass snakes are also abundant on the pool fringes.

The open water is home to various species including eel, pike, tench, roach rudd and swan mussels.
