Kidderminster Town Council will be created on Tuesday 1 December 2015.
At a meeting of Wyre Forest District Council last night (Wednesday 30 September 2015), Councillors approved the Reorganisation Order. This is a legal document which explains how the Town Council will be set up. It includes the electoral arrangements and the transfer of specific assets from Wyre Forest District Council.
There will be six wards – the same ones as the District Council. They will be Aggborough & Spennells, Blakebrook & Habberley South, Broadwaters, Foley Park & Hoobrook, Franche & Habberley North and Offmore & Comberton. There will be 3 Councillors elected for each of the wards. Elections will take place every 4 years. The first elections to the new Council are due to be held on 5 May 2016. Between December and the elections next May the current serving Wyre Forest District Councillors for Kidderminster wards will serve as members of the new council.
Over the summer Wyre Forest District Council carried out a consultation. A clear majority of responses supported the electoral arrangements and agreed with the suggested transfer of specific assets. The assets will be transferred on Friday 1 April 2016 and include Kidderminster Town Hall , Market Street toilets and Kidderminster War Memorial.
Councillor Marcus Hart, Leader of the Council said:
“This is an exciting time for Kidderminster. In just a couple of months the town will have a single collective voice for the first time since 1974. Residents have been able to get involved in the process. In May 2015, residents made it clear they wanted to see a Town Council when nearly 80% of voters supported the idea. This is an overwhelming mandate and a clear demonstration that we have listened to the people. We have now been able to bring that to fruition and in May 2016 residents will be voting for members of the new council.”
