Free smoke alarms are being offered to private landlords in Wyre Forest to help them comply with new tough safety regulations.
From October 1st 2015 it became compulsory for all landlords to install a smoke alarm on every floor of their properties and carbon monoxide alarms in any habitable room where a solid fuel heating system is installed.
To help landlords comply with the new regulations Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Service is offering to provide a limited number of free smoke alarms which will be distributed Wyre Forest District Council.
The council is responsible for enforcing the new regulations and landlords who fail to comply could face fines of up to £5,000 per property.
Under the rules managing agents or their representatives must check that all alarms are in working order at the start of each tenancy and replace any of those which are not.
Tenants should be told to check the alarms on a regular basis and tell the landlord, managing agent or other representative if they are not working.
Cabinet member Health, Well-being and Housing Councillor Sally Chambers said: “This is a great opportunity to help our private landlords get to grips with the new regulations and I would urge them to apply without delay.
“Ultimately it is about saving lives and by everyone working together we will hopefully be able to avoid the kind of tragedies that have taken place in other places.”
To get your free smoke alarms you will need to complete a ‘Request for Smoke Detectors Form’ available from the Private Sector Housing Team at the District Council on 01562 732190.
Once the completed forms are returned smoke alarms can be collected from the reception of Wyre Forest House, Finepoint Way, Kidderminster.
The council will supply one smoke alarm per floor of the property but landlords will be responsible for installing them in their properties.
