Planning permission has been granted for a new leisure centre for the district.
Wyre Forest District Council’s Planning Committee gave the thumbs up to the £11.9million project at its meeting last night (Tuesday 10 March 2015).
Outline planning permission for the leisure centre at Silverwoods (the former British Sugar Site) on the Kidderminster to Stourport Road was granted in May 2014. Last night the Committee unanimously approved the detailed plans submitted by Places for People Leisure Ltd.
The leisure centre will include a sports hall, six lane 25m swimming pool, learner pool, fitness suite, dance studios, climbing wall and small-sided outdoor football pitches. It will also have a cafe with viewing areas, a double height children’s adventure play area and a health suite with sauna and steam room. Artist impressions of the centre and a virtual tour of the site are available to view on the Council’s website.
Councillor Marcus Hart, Leader of Wyre Forest District Council said,
“This Council is about making positive things happen in the district. The new leisure centre is a great example of this. It will be a wonderful addition to the area and offer amazing sporting opportunities for all. As well as the fantastic facilities, the new centre will save the District Council and tax payers’ more than £390,000 a year. ”
Work to level the site is due to start this month.
Peter Kirkham Development Director at PfPL said:
“The district deserves a first class leisure centre, we firmly believe that’s what we have designed and we are delighted the Committee agree. Now we can start laying the foundations – not just of a fantastic sporting complex, but of new sporting ambitions for the area.”
The new leisure centre is due to open in Summer 2016. The authority’s current leisure centres will be operating as normal until the new centre opens. Details are available at www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/leisurecentres.
