The vision for the regeneration of the canal basins in Stourport-on-Severn is in sight with the imminent demolition of the former Lloyd’s Garage site on Bridge Street.
Councillor John Campion (pictured), Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning & Economic Regeneration said
“This site represents a major regeneration opportunity in the town. The basins have been a hidden jewel, so we are delighted to be able to reveal them for local people and visitors. Prospective investors will be able to easily visualise see the commercial opportunity that the basins provide.”
Whilst partners continue to work on securing final development proposals the site will provide a temporary car park for 34 more spaces in the centre of town.
Cllr Campion added: "We are working hard with our partners the Homes and Communities Agency and Canal and River Trust to progress the Bridge Street basins redevelopment and in the meantime, it is felt that a temporary car park would make good use of the site and support the vibrant summer visitor season.”
Councillor Helen Dyke, Member Champion for Centres, said: "The economic climate over the last few years has made bringing forward regeneration plans particularly difficult. Opening up the Bridge Street basins link will show how a mixed use commercial, retail and residential development would greatly enhance the town.”
The demolition of the former Lloyds garage is planned to take place week commencing 23 June 2014.
