Best Foot Forward Project

The Best Foot Forward project aims to increase walking opportunites throughout the district and raise awareness of the associated health benefits from being active.

The project looks to increase participation by developing a range of led and independent walks using local green space and nature reserves.

From here you can find information about independent and led walks, existing walking groups and Nature Reserve waymark trails.

There are also links to other walking groups in the district on the Walking for Health homepage.

If you would like to know more about walking opportunities in the District or if you are interested in becoming a walk leader please contact your local Walking Co-ordinator:

Walking is the closest thing to perfect exercise.

It's recommended that everyone should be active for at least 30 minutes a day, for five days of the week.

Walking is a great way to achieve this as you can build it into your day instead of trying to find time for it.

You don't have to do the whole 30 minutes straight away - you can break it down into 3 ten minute or 2 fifteen minute walks.

The Importance of physical activity and health

Being more active can bring about a wide range of health benefits, including disease prevention, weight managment and positive mental health promotion.

Walking is free and easy, almost anyone can do it.

It's an easy activity to start and you can then gradually build up the amount you do.

Walking can be easily built into your daily routine.

Not enough time to go walking?

Here are some helpful tips on how to build your 30 minutes of walking into your day.
  • Walk to the local shop or postbox
  • Get off the bus a stop early
  • Park the car further away from the supermarket
  • Take the stairs instead of the lift
  • Borrow a friend's dog and take it for a walk
  • Walk the children to school
The best way to keep doing something is to build it into your daily routine.
