Advantage West Midlands

AWM is the Regional Development Agency (RDA) for the West Midlands region. Their role is to lead the economic development of the West Midlands, working alongside a wide range of public, private, and voluntary sectors partners to aid the prosperity of the region.

AWM has an annual budget of more than £300 million to invest in the economic development of the West Midlands and, at any one time, is managing around 2,500 projects.

AWM set up the Market Towns Initiative that provides financial support towards projects that help support the viability and prosperity of towns for the benefit of town’s people and their rural hinterland from which Stourport and Bewdley have both benefited. They have also set up the Rural Regeneration Zones Initiative for which Bewdley and the surrounding area qualifies.

AWM also provide funding for individual regeneration projects around the District.

Wyre Forest Matters

Wyre Forest Matters is the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) for the District. The partnership consists of a group of over 100 local organisations from the public, private, voluntary and community sectors who are committed to working together to improve the quality of life in the district over the next 10 years. They provide a forum for debate and decision making for the key issues and problems that are at the heart of the community.

As part of this the LSP has produced a Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS) which is a document that identifies a common agenda, key themes, clear priorities and achievable outcomes and has widespread community ownership. The Council’s Core Strategy will reflect the vision set out in SCS and will help deliver many SCS priorities.

Worcestershire Partnership

Worcestershire Partnership is the LSP for the whole County. Similar to Wyre Forest Matters, the partnership looks to improve the quality of life in the County over a 10 year period, bringing together public, private, voluntary and community sectors.

The partnership have also produced a SCS for the county and have also completed a Local Area Agreement (LAA) – a three year agreement setting out priorities for the area.

Stourport Forward

The Stourport Forward Market Towns Programme is a 3 year regeneration programme created to manage the funding received from AWM’s Market Towns Initiative.

Stourport Forward board members were elected from the Stourport Forward Partnership (which consists of representatives from local groups) in addition to an elected representative of Wyre Forest District Council and British Waterways as the Accountable Body.

There are three major projects on the Stourport Forward programme:

  1. Restoration of Stourport Canal Basins (British Waterways)
  2. Revitalisation of the Sandy Lane Industrial Estate (British Business Parks)
  3. Stourport Pride Study (Wyre Forest District Council)

Beyond the three main projects Stourport Forward also has awarded a number of smaller grants to projects and is developing new projects for 2007/2008.

Work is already underway to consider the future work and role of Stourport Forward once the Market Towns programme funding ends in March 2008.

Bewdley Development Trust

Bewdley Development Trust (BDT) is a community led partnership of members, residents, community groups and local businesses as well as the town, district and county councils.

The BDT's aim is to maintain Bewdley as a thriving, high quality market town which meets the needs of the local community, enhances the town's historic character, encourages and supports existing and new creative businesses, and achieves a reputation distinct from other neighbouring towns.

Part of this scheme is to deliver the Local Distinctiveness Action Plan aimed at enhancing the offering of the town for residents and visitors.

The BDT has already been successful in securing grants from a variety of funding sources to deliver projects which have made real improvements to the physical infrastructure of the town, given support to local community organisations and businesses, contributed to transport schemes and helped enhance and publicise Bewdley’s offering as a visitor attraction.

Kidderminster Town Centre Partnership

The Kidderminster Town Centre Partnership (KTCP) was formed to provide a focus group to address town centre issues and develop a coordinated and comprehensive response to challenges facing the town and its development.

Its work programme includes providing the town’s Christmas Lights, speciality markets and involvement in projects such as CCTV and public realm improvements. The Partnership has also endorsed the re-launch of the Thursday street market in the town centre, and continues to support the development of markets in the town.

Oldington and Foley Park Pathfinder Project

The pathfinder project is a neighbourhood management scheme set up to improve the provision of public services and life chances for residents of the Oldington and Foley Park area of Kidderminster.

The pathfinder is a government funded scheme that first emerged due to the fact that the area is within the 10% most deprived in the country. It will receive a £2.5 million injection of community funding over its 7 years lifespan to tackle the problems of the area.

The funding supports a small local team of 5 people and provides limited seed corn funding for residents and partners to try new ways of working. The principle is that local people and partners are to work together to find long term solutions to the problems that affect the area and to develop strong working partnerships.
