Sportivate
Programme
This year we see a new national initiative
‘Sportivate’. The programme is aimed towards encouraging 14-25 year
olds to take part in a sport of their choice
for 6 weeks.
The programme targets people who are not
currently choosing to participate in sport in their own time, or
are doing so for a very limited amount of time. An important aspect
of the initiative is to provide a sustainable exit route to a local
sports club or a leisure membership.
Sportivate will be fully inclusive and target
participants across this group, including young people who have a
disability, both males and females.
Olympic legacy urges young people to give sport a
go
Thousands of teenagers
and young adults from across Herefordshire and Worcestershire are
set to benefit from a new sports programme launched today. It aims
to fulfil the legacy promise made by Seb Coe in Singapore in 2005
to ‘inspire young people to choose sport.’
‘Sportivate’, the
initiative – launched by Sport England and The Sports Partnership
for Herefordshire and Worcestershire - will give 14-25 year olds
the chance to receive six to eight weeks of coaching in a sport of
their choice.
Thanks to £376,040 of
Lottery investment in Herefordshire and Worcestershire over the
next four years, at least 3,525 local people will be able to take
part in a wide range of activities from basketball and dragon
boat racing to tennis and zumba.
Nationally, the
£32million National Lottery funded project is part of the ‘Places
People Play’ mass participation legacy programme. This aims to
get those who aren’t currently getting involved with sport a chance
to give it a go. To help inspire and motivate the
participants, Sport England’s Sporting Champions – a team of
current and retired elite athletes – will visit Sportivate sessions
to share their experiences and enthusiasm for sport.
As an additional
incentive, teenagers and young adults who carry on in sport, will
have the chance to enter a ballot for free London 2012
tickets. Sport England has a number of Olympic and Paralympic
tickets available for Sportivate participants via the London 2012
Ticketshare initiative.
