working in partnership with DC Leisure have been running 10 weeks
of disability sports for young people at The Glades Leisure
Centre.
Twice a week students have the opportunity to come and take part

Weekly Sport Sessions
The Sports Development section runs a weekly sports coaching
session for adults with learning and physical disabilities. This is
run in partnership with the Wyre Forest Leisure Group, a part of
The Odell Trust. A
variety of sports are offered every week with the aim of increasing
physical activity levels whilst improving the basic skills of the
participants.
|
Specifically, during each session we deliver sports such as
Boccia, Curling, Parachute games and Box Hockey to enhance mobility
levels and encourage social interaction.

The sessions take place at
Wyre Forest Glades Leisure Centre from 10.30-11.30am and run
during term-time throughout the year.

|
We ensure that these sessions are open to all levels of ability
and are free of charge. These weekly sports
sessions lead up to a sports event in July which is held at a
sports venue within the District.

Bowls in the Park
Throughout the summer sports development ran sports
sessions in the parks across the district. Due to
the popularity of short mat bowls, this year we delivered
sessions for people who are keen to play bowls.
Each session was held at Brinton Park in
Kidderminster and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. In
addition, we held games and multi-sport activities at Lickhill
Memorial Park in Stourport.

Short Mat Bowls at The Glades Leisure Centre
On Tuesday’s at the Glades Leisure Centre, Wyre Forest District
Council Sports Development team are running Short Mat Bowl sessions
for adults with disabilities.
In total there will be 8 sessions, the first session began on
the 1st February and the final session being just before
the Easter Holiday’s. During this time up to 16 participants have
learnt the basics of the sport and are now putting their skills to
the test in fun competitions/matches against one another.

The sessions, delivered by Dale Evans, WFDC Sport Development
Officer and assisted by Brian Young from a Wyre Forest Bowling
Club, have been a massive success. All of the participants and
their carers have really enjoyed it and they are hopeful the
sessions continue after Easter.

Short Mat Bowls is unfortunately not a Paralympics Sport, but if
it was we're sure we would have got Gold at ‘London 12’.
However, we hope to keep practicing, dream of Gold, and hope it’s
included in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, Brazil.
