National Family Week, the UK’s biggest celebration of family life, kicked off the summer halfterm holidays between 31st May and 6th June with over 5000 family-friendly events and activities taking place across the country. Wyre Forest District Council was proud to be part of this great family initiative and to promote positive family life. On Friday 4th June 2010, the Council’s Sports Development Team held its own “Sports Day” for families in support of National Family Week.

Throughout the afternoon families were able to participate in numerous sporting activities such as basketball, football, dance, cheerleading, tennis, cricket and ultimate frisbee. Due to the excellent weather, the event saw over 40 families being physically active with family and friends within St Georges Park. With thanks to the Psychedelic Rhinos Ultimate Frisbee club for offering their support throughout the afternoon provided families with the opportunity to play a different sporting activity.

Sport in the park Wyre Forest District Council’s Sports Development team aims to encourage and increase opportunities for children of all abilities to take part in sport and develop their skills within a safe environment. As a result, during the Easter Holidays Wyre Forest District Council organised and held multi-sports sessions within recreational parks across the district.
Sport in the park The sessions were offered to boys and girls aged 8-14 years to take part in sporting activities, to learn new skills and utilise those skills within competitive small sided games.
Sport in the park The progamme of activities involved tennis, Kwik cricket, basketball, football and rounders. As the weather improved towards the end of the week we were able to get more young people playing sport with a maximum of 15 children at Shaw Hedge Park in Bewdley. As well as Shaw Hedge Park we were able to offer activities at Stourport Memorial Park, Areley Kings Park and St Georges Park throughout the two weeks.
