National Family Week - Sports Day 2010

Wyre Forest District Council brings family fun to Kidderminster
to celebrate National Family Week 2010.
National Family Week, the UK’s biggest celebration of family
life, kicked off the summer halfterm holidays between
31st May and 6th June with over 5000
family-friendly events and activities taking place across the
country. Wyre Forest District Council was proud to be part of this
great family initiative and to promote positive family life. On
Friday 4th June 2010, the Council’s Sports Development
Team held its own “Sports Day” for families in support of National
Family Week.
Throughout the afternoon families were able to participate in
numerous sporting activities such as basketball, football, dance,
cheerleading, tennis, cricket and ultimate frisbee. Due to the
excellent weather, the event saw over 40 families being physically
active with family and friends within St Georges Park. With thanks
to the Psychedelic Rhinos Ultimate Frisbee club for offering their
support throughout the afternoon provided families with the
opportunity to play a different sporting activity.

Wyre Forest District Council’s Sports Development team aims to
encourage and increase opportunities for children of all abilities
to take part in sport and develop their skills within a safe
environment. As a result, during the Easter Holidays Wyre Forest
District Council organised and held multi-sports sessions within
recreational parks across the district. |
 |
The sessions were offered to boys and girls aged 8-14 years to
take part in sporting activities, to learn new skills and utilise
those skills within competitive small sided games. |
 |
The progamme of activities involved tennis, Kwik cricket,
basketball, football and rounders. As the weather improved towards
the end of the week we were able to get more young people playing
sport with a maximum of 15 children at Shaw Hedge Park in Bewdley.
As well as Shaw Hedge Park we were able to offer activities at
Stourport Memorial Park, Areley Kings Park and St Georges Park
throughout the two weeks. |
 |
Community Sports Coach, Lucy Savage who delivered the sessions
said
“The park sessions were a great opportunity for the children to
try something new during the school holidays and to be physically
active with family and friends. The sports development team will
aim to hold more park sessions throughout the summer.”

games with their family and friends. With thanks to the Patrick
Lucas (Badminton Development Officer) and The Glades Leisure
Centre for kindly providing the necessary equipment throughout

Lets Kick Racism out of Football Week
The Wyre Forest District
Council “Showed Racism the RED
card”
 |
The Wyre Forest District Council in conjunction with
Worcestershire Football Association held the
‘One Game,
One Community weeks in action’
throughout October half term 2009 .
During the week qualified coaches delivered free coaching sessions
using “the beautiful game” as a tool to raise awareness of
racism. |
 |
The sessions were run by community sports coaches who were
driven to make young people aware of the issue. With help from
Worcestershire FA and Barnardos we were able to give away brilliant
prizes including Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS computer games, ipods
and “lets kick racism out of football” t-shirts. |
We had a maximum of 14 children incorporating
a mixture of cultures and genders with attendees from the local
Bangladeshi community within St Georges.
Next year the Wyre Forest District Council aim
to deliver the “Lets Kick Racism out of Football” campaign during
October half term 2010 throughout the district.
