Broadwaters Project 2010

Broadwaters Wood Carving

We have been working with the Friends of Broadwaters for a number of years, successfully working together to improve the park and involve the community in the process.  This year has seen yet another ambitious development, with funding gained from Groundwork UK for the Community Spaces programme for the Big Lottery Fund Ground and the Kidderminster Education Foundation. Improvements have been made to the senses garden, footpaths and wetland area.

Totem drawing The Friends worked in partnership with WFDC to commission wood carver Nansi Hemmings to create a bespoke piece for the park.  Nansi used wildlife which can be found in the park as her inspiration for a totem style sculpture with benches and drums on either end.  Nansi was chosen by local people through a voting system after the Friends short listed from a range of artists who applied for the commission

Nansi also carved 3 tree stumps around the park into characters which add to the magic and are very popular with small children.

The work that has been completed this year was launched with a laser light and firework celebration which was very well attended on the 21st of October.  Local children worked with artists Jo and Kate DeBurgh of PLANET to create animal lanterns to light the park on the night.

Why not have a look at Broadwaters, it has changed dramatically over the last few years thanks to the Friends Group and their tireless fund raising and hard work to keep the park a lovely place to visit.

The Friends group work daily on litter picking, monthly on garden maintenance and meet once a month in the local pub. They also have social outings. They range in age from 18 to 80+ and all are welcome to join. Anyone can belong and it's a fun way to meet people and get some fresh air and exercise.
