Race Equality
The Race Equality Scheme (RES) is the Council's plan setting out
how we will promote race equality and make sure that we don't
discriminate against individuals or groups based on ethnicity,
religion or race. The Race Equality Scheme is contained within the
Single
Equality Scheme 2008 - 2011
(257K) (SES).
As a result of the Race Relations Amendment Act (2000), all
Local Authorities have a responsibility to produce a Race Equality
Scheme based on the demographics of their area. This makes Wyre
Forest's RES unique to Wyre Forest. The RES will ensure that the
Council:
- eliminates unlawful racial discrimination
- promotes equality of opportunity
- promotes good relations between people of different racial
groups
The document details the policies and functions that Wyre Forest
District Council needs to have in place in order to comply with the
Act. There is also an Action Plan which details how we are going to
carry out the work. For example, we have a specific duty to
undertake work relating to employment, monitoring, access to
information, consultation and training.
Race Equality
Following the Macpherson Report into The Stephen Lawrence
Inquiry, the Government introduced the Race Relations (Amendment)
Act in 2000. This new Act strengthens previous
legislation and places new duties on all public
authorities.
These new duties are designed to make sure that public
authorities promote race equality and that employment and services
are fair and accessible for everyone. Our Race Equality Scheme sets
out how we’re meeting our general duties under the Race Relations
Amendment Act to:
- eliminate racial discrimination;
- promote equality of opportunity and
- promote good race relations between different racial
groups.
Detailed information about race equality in the UK is available
