River and Rail

A Design and Technology hands-on workshop

The history of  the coracle, different ways of crossing or travelling along the river, followed by the chance to view a variety of full-sized coracles and a hands-on model making session working in pairs.

Town Trail

A practical look at building styles and developments

Using Bewdley as an example of a contrasting location to an inner city, learn about the development of the town’s varied architectural styles. Includes a hands-on demonstration of brick making, wattle and daub and timber framing. Also follow an ‘eye spy’ trail walk around the town to spot the examples illustrated.

Bewdley Trades

A look at the town’s past trades – the cooper, the butcher, the pipemaker  Learn about the trades and crafts that helped to develop the town. A short illustrated introduction and the museum’s collection of artefacts for coopering, charcoal burning, besom broom making all help to illustrate these traditional crafts.
Also included… an exciting hands-on session of ropemaking in the museum’s ropewalk and clay pipe making demonstrations.

Blitz and Evacuation

Blitz programme

Living History activity presented by ‘Discover History'

A unique insight into the evacuation experiences of children and their families during the World War II. With a lively hands-on approach by our costumed interpreter Paul Harding.  Includes:
- life on the Home Front and use of original and replica artefacts
- experience the Blitz in the museum’s own air raid shelter.
- a real life ‘evacuation’ on a steam train to SVR Education Centre at Highley.

Blitz and the Home Front

Air Raid Shelter

The same programme as above but without the train. 

After setting the scene for the wartime period, the day includes the black out, civil defence jobs, evacuation, rationing and children’s wartime games as well as the chance to learn about the different types of air raid shelters by experiencing a visit to our own at the museum.

A Local History Study 

History Book

 

Living History activity presented by ‘Discover History’

The terrible Civil War, Bewdley’s Georgian heyday, workers of the 19th century or other important periods in times gone by can be explored in tailor-made workshops.  Local History will spring from the dusty pages of history books and groups will see how the town of Bewdley changed during, and since, your chosen age.

The Tudor Age is brought to life by Discover History in an interactive way.  See how life in Tudor times was very different for rich and poor people.  Hear all about that period in history when people lived in timber-framed houses, threw toilet waste into the streets and only washed on rare occasions.

The Making of a Canal Town

Discover the fascinating story of the early development of Stourport-on-Severn and its historic canal basins.

Includes a guided trail of Stourport’s canal basins.When available, the chance to step onto a real narrow boat to see what life was really like on the waterways of England.

Orchards and fruit

Apples in Orchard

An exciting, new, environment-based programme to learn about orchards and fruit picking in bygone eras and investigate the disappearance of many orchards throughout the region. You can:

- visit a newly planted orchard
- find out about the plants and wildlife in the orchards
- use creative skills to make a mini-beast or fruit design from clay

Beside the Seaside, Beside the Sea

Bewdley was often used as a ‘day trip’ experience by the industrialised Midlands.

Through interactive involvement, children will be able to learn all about the various ways that their parents and grandparents enjoyed their special leisure times and had……best holidays, favourite places and precious souvenirs.

Grandma's Attic

granny's attic Explore the contents of great, great Grandma’s house through  observation of original 19th and 20th century artefacts from the museum’s collections. What did she use to clean her floors, wash her clothes or even curl her hair with?

Skip and Play - Toys

What sort of toys did our parents and grandparents play with? What were they made of and how have construction materials changed? Handling session with sketching and the chance to play with replica favourites. A simple vocabulary labelling exercise can be an option as well.

Presented by ‘Discover History’

To commemorate the centenary of Florence nightingale's death, come to the Museum to:
- hear how Florence Nightingale revolutionised the care of casualties during the Crimean war
- handle reproduction artefacts to bring this famous nurse alive!
