Fly Tipping
Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish or bulky items
on land that is not licensed to receive it. Fly tipping pollutes
land and waterways and apart from being unsightly is dangerous to
the public.
Fly tipping of controlled waste e.g. household, industrial and
commercial waste is a serious criminal offence that carries a fine
of up to £50,000. An offender can even be sent to prison for up to
5 years.
What are the five most frequently fly tipped items?
- Household rubbish.
- Larger domestic items such as fridges, mattresses or old
furniture.
- Construction, demolition and home improvement rubbish.
- Garden rubbish.
- Rubbish from businesses.
What are the Council's responsibilities?
The Council is responsible for clearing flytipping and dumped
waste on public land and may investigate to see if the offender can
be identified. If the fly tipping case goes to court, the fine
can be as much as £2,500.
How do I know waste is being fly tipped?
Fly tipping happens at all hours of the day and night so you
may witness it at any time. Suspicious activities include vehicles
laden with rubbish driving down narrow track lanes.
What do I do if I discover fly tipped waste or I see someone
fly tipping?
If you discover fly tipped waste after the tippers have left,
please follow these simple guidelines.
- Do not touch the waste. Fly tipped waste can be dangerous it
may contain syringes, broken glass, asbestos, toxic chemicals or
other hazardous substances.
- Make a visual inspection of the waste and try to assess what it
is and how much there is.
- Do not disturb the site as there may be evidence that could
help identify the culprits and lead to their prosecution.
- Make a note of the exact location of the dumped materials and
whether it is in or near water.

If you see someone fly tipping, do not put yourself at risk but try
to remember some important information and write it down as soon as
possible.
- The day, date and time you saw the fly tipping;
- Details of any vehicle involved e.g. make, colour, registration
number;
- Details of any individuals involved e.g. how many people, what
they looked like and what they were doing;
- How good was your view and how far away were you;
- Any more information about the location and type of material
dumped.
How can I dispose of waste safely and legally?
To dispose of domestic waste you can:
- recycle using the fortnightly kerbside service;
- use the fortnightly refuse service;
- take domestic waste to the nearest tip; or
- use Wyre Forest District Council's bulky
waste service for the collection of large items such as

To dispose of commercial waste (resulting from business activities
such as landscaping or garden services) you should:
- contact a commercial waste carrier or skip hire company. (See

Who is the Council working with to tackle fly tipping?
Wyre Forest District Council is working in partnership with
the Environment Agency, the Community Housing Group and West Mercia
Constabulary to tackle the scourge of fly tipping.
