Could you be a composting king?
Wyre Forest District Council is looking for 6 households to take
up composting for the first time.
The idea is to show how easy and rewarding composting is and the
great rewards it returns. It reduces waste to landfill and
helps protect the environment. This is because if garden waste is
sent to landfill it will rot in the ground and produce methane – a
greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change.
Composting also gives you rich, earthy compost that can be used on
gardens, vegetable patches and in hanging baskets or pots.
And its not just garden waste and peelings which can be composted,
tea bags, shredded paper and even the contents of your vacuum
cleaner can be included!
The volunteers will be given a free composting kit, which
includes a compost bin, and a kitchen caddy along with an
instruction booklet. They will also be given help setting up
the compost bin and be provided with ongoing advice and support
thanks to volunteer 'Master Composters', who have been trained
through Worcestershire County Council.
Councillor Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council's
Cabinet Member for Resources said,
"Composting is one of the easiest, most natural and oldest
methods of recycling and we want to encourage more people to give
it a go. We are looking for volunteer households so we can
chart their progress. Their findings will be used as case
studies for others who may not be sure that composting is right for
them."
Anyone who would like to volunteer should contact Wyre Forest
District Council on 01562 732928 or visit our composting
webpages for an application form. The closing date
for applications is Friday 11th March, and successful applicants
will be notified by March 18th. Compost bins are to be set up by
April 1st.
