Recycling rates rises
More waste is being recycled in the district thanks to residents
taking up Wyre Forest District Council's new recycling scheme.
In July there was an increase of 14% in the amount of recycling
over the June figures - that is more than 200 tonnes less waste
going to landfill.
The new recycling scheme was introduced at the start of July,
with green wheelie bins for all recycling materials. More
items were also introduced to the recycling scheme including yogurt
pots, all cardboard boxes and juice cartons.
Councillor Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council's
Cabinet Member for
Resources
said,
"Many thanks to all the residents for helping us increase the
amount of recycling. We were one of the first districts in
the county to introduce a recycling scheme and we have always
performed well. With the introduction of the green wheeled
bins we've already seen our recycling rate rise – and these figures
are just for part of the month, so it's a fantastic
achievement.
He added,
"Recycling is important and cutting waste to landfill still
remains an issue in this Country. It's a fact that Britain will run
out of landfill space in less than eight years time unless
recycling rates are boosted and the amount of rubbish dumped in the
ground is reduced. We hope more residents will take up the
scheme and increase our rates further."
Residents can keep the old recycling boxes for storage or if
they have no longer any use for them they can also be taken to the
household tip where they will be recycled.
