Council opens MOT test centre

Motorists can now take their vehicles for a MOT at Wyre Forest District Council’s workshop. The vehicle workshop, based at Green Street depot, Kidderminster, can provide residents with an MOT test for cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

It is the first in the county to offer viewing of the test via a CCTV link.  It means motorists can see the mechanics checking their vehicle from the comfort of the reception area.

The workshop mechanics carry out an independent check but they do not make any repairs, this ensures an unbiased test as there is no incentive for mechanics to find faults.  If a vehicle fails, the owner will only be told what repairs are necessary to pass the retest, which is free.

Council-run centres have been praised in an article by Money Saving Expert.

Councillor Nathan Desmond, Cabinet Member of District Resources, said “The Council is always looking for ways to save money and deliver value.  The introduction of the MOT centre is a means of generating additional income through charging members of the public for MOTs.  It will help us reduce overheads and also offer a valuable service to the public.“

Prices for Class 4 vehicles such as cars and light vans are £36.00 and Class 7 vehicles - over 3 tonnes up to 3.5 tonnes are £52.50   Residents can book their vehicle in for an MOT by calling 01562 732941 or 732927.
