Cabinet Considers One Hour Free Parking Proposal
Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet will be considering the
second phase of its review of car parking in the district at its
meeting on 16th November.
In July the Council agreed a number of changes
to the Car Park Order which came into effect on 1st
October. The Council saw that as a first phase of a project to
restore consistency, fairness and equity within and between the
three towns in the district. This second phase considers the
parking charges that apply across the car parks and tackles the
piecemeal inconsistencies that have developed over a number of
years.
An approach that values the premium location
of the most central car parks in Kidderminster, Stourport and
Bewdley and encourages longer stay on the more outlying car parks
will be considered and for the first time will see identical
charges applied across the three towns for the vast majority of the
lengths of stay. It is also proposed that those car parks classed
as outlying the town centres will offer the first hour’s parking
for free.
Wyre Forest District Council Cabinet Member
for Housing and Environmental Services, Marcus Hart, said, “I am
pleased to be able to bring forward this second phase of our review
of car parking so soon after the October 1st changes
were introduced so that people can now see the complete picture.
The changes we are proposing follow the principles of consistency,
fairness and equity that were the touchstones of the first phase of
the review. I hope that our innovative approach that treats our
three main towns in the same way will be well received by
Councillors, residents and businesses alike and I look forward to
presenting the proposals for the first time at our meeting on
16th November.”
He added, “I am particularly delighted to be
able to announce a proposed one hour free car parking on a number
of car parks throughout the three towns. I hope this will be
well received by residents and businesses alike.”
It is proposed that after the Cabinet meeting
on 16th November the proposals will be subjected to a
thorough scrutiny by the Council’s Corporate Resources Committee
before reporting back to Cabinet in January in time for
consideration by the Full Council at its meeting on 23rd
February 2011 where a final decision is expected.
The changes would take effect from October
3rd 2011.
