Memorial service for honorary alderman
A civic memorial service to celebrate the life of the late
Honorary Alderman John Simmonds is to be held at Rock Parish Church
on Saturday 27th March.
The service is being organised by Wyre Forest District Council
and Rock Parish Council.
Mr Simmonds, who passed away on Saturday 12 December 2009, was a
Member of Wyre Forest District Council (Shadow Authority) in 1973
and then Wyre Forest District Council representing Rock ward,
between 1974 and 2008 (excepting 2000 - 2004). He was Chairman of
the Council from 2004 to 2005 and was made Honorary Alderman in
September 2008.
Stephen Clee, Clerk to Rock Parish Council where John was still
an elected councillor until his death, said:
"Everyone is welcome to attend the service, which starts at
2.00pm. This is a joyful occasion to celebrate the life of
Councillor Simmonds who served on Rock Parish Council for over 55
years. John was Parish Chairman in 1974, 1978, 1988 and 2000.
He also served on Wyre Forest District Council for 26 years from
1974 until 2000. He was made an Honorary Alderman by the District
Council in 2008"
There will be a collection at the service, with proceeds going
to the Millbrook Suite Appeal. This is the Chairman of Wyre Forest
District Council's current charity for 2009-10.
Councillor Mike Salter, Chairman of Wyre Forest District Council
said:
"This service is an opportunity to give thanks for John's life
and for all the work he did helping others. He was dedicated to
serving the community and many people benefited from his work. We
hope the community will join us in remembering him and celebrating
his achievements."
