New cycle track opens in Stourport-on-Severn

Cyclists in the Wyre Forest district are on their starting blocks as a brand new £440,000 track is launched at Stourport Sports Club.

Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club and Stourport Sports Club have teamed up with funding investor British Cycling to build a new 1.5 km closed road circuit at the club located on Kingsway, Stourport on Severn.

The track will officially be opened this Friday (11th June 2010) when local riders will join in the celebration event.

Stourport Sports Club now offers a true sports village, including facilities for hockey, netball and athletics.

The new track can be used by individuals, booked for private events and used for other sports such as in-line skating, walking, road running as well as hand cycling and is particularly safe for people with disabilities.

Wyre Forest District Council's Cabinet Member for Community & Partnership Services Councillor Tracey Onslow said

"Stourport Sports Club partners worked really hard to get the new facility up and running. We hope that local people will take up the opportunity and come and ride the track. We're always working with partners to get Wyre Forest residents participating in sport. Cycling at the new track is a great family activity and a safe way to get some exercise and have fun together."

The layout of the circuit has shallow but long climbs and descents with technical elements as well as flat sections which collectively test the strength and skills of all those using the circuit.

The track is the new home for Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club. Club President, Alf Sparks, said

"This track brings a new dimension into the sport of road racing in the local area. We have a great opportunity to develop our club and introduce a new generation into the sport. The Go Ride project introducing young people to racing is going extremely well. I'm sure this track will also encourage people who used to ride to get their bikes out again! "

Anyone wishing to book the track or turn up to ride please email the Facilities Manager Fran Moss or call the Sports Club on: 01299 877200
