Spitfire returns to Bewdley
Staff at Bewdley Museum are getting set to step back in time for
their 1940’s weekend on 3rd & 4th July.
The event is planned to coincide with the second weekend of the
Severn Valley Railway’s 1940’s event.
Dave Darby, museum technician said “Visitors
come in to Bewdley town centre from the railway station, so we
thought it would be great if they could carry on their World War II
experience at the museum. During the war years, Bewdley, Stourport
and Kidderminster towns jointly raised £6,888 towards the purchase
of a Spitfire to help in the defence of the country. We thought it
would be a bit of fun to build a model spitfire that people could
sit in. It grew to 23ft long!”
In addition to the Spitfire there will be
dancing, music, period costume, make-do and mend activities, fun
with 1940’s makeovers and wartime recipes from the café. Costumed
Air Raid Wardens will give tours in the museum’s genuine World War
II Air Raid Shelter and a real siren will give Air Raid warnings
during the day.
Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District
Council’s Cabinet member for Community and Partnerships said
“Over 3,500 visitors enjoyed the museum over the bank holiday
weekend in May. We hope this event will prove just as popular. It’s
really exciting seeing the event take shape and fantastic to have
so much going on in Bewdley to attract more visitors to the area.
And, as well as visitors, we would also encourage residents to take
this opportunity to visit their local museum”
The event starts at 10am and finishes at
4.30pm (last entry 4pm). Entry is free.
