Uncovering the Wyre Forest
Bewdley Museum’s latest exhibition reveals
hidden insights into the Wyre Forest. The modern technology of
Light Detection and Aerial Ranging (LiDAR) has been used to reveal
the location of ancient settlements within the Wyre Forest. Some of
the settlements revealed include, The Wassell Wood Enclosure, Wall
Town Fort and the Hawkbatch Historic Forest.
The survey was commissioned as part of the
Grow with Wyre Landscape Partnerships Scheme in conjunction with
Worcestershire Archaeological Survey. Elizabeth Cowley Bewdley
Museum’s Collections Officer got the partners together to create
the exhibition. Elizabeth said:
“The LiDAR survey is one of 18 projects that
will facilitate the restoration of ancient forest landscapes and
woodland habitats, many of which have been lost over the last
century. Fascinating sites can be seen from the surveys which tell
us a lot about the historic past of the area.”
Superb aerial images can be seen in the
exhibition along with rock samples relating the Wyre Forest.

“This is a fabulous exhibition and we hope
that it will encourage more people to go out and see what’s on
their doorstep. As well as the exhibition there are also walks,
rock and fossil fun days with the Earth Heritage Trust and the
Hagley Falcons will be in action in the Jubilee Gardens.”
The walks and fun days can be enjoyed during
July and August and the Hagley Falcons will be visiting on Saturday
24th July between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm with flying
displays at 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm. The exhibition can be viewed
daily from 10.00 am – 4.00pm in Bewdley Museum’s Wyre Forest
Gallery until 15th August.
