Community decision for new public art in Horsefair
Local stakeholders and partners gathered at Council Offices at
Duke House Kidderminster on Friday 9th July to discuss
proposals for a piece of public art for the Horsefair in
Kidderminster.
The meeting was attended by members of community groups and
local councillors who decided the way forward for the project which
has £12,000 of funding from developers, Cox Homes. Although the
original concept design did have public support, this was not
universal and therefore the stakeholders decided to take a
different approach.
A brief will be issued in September inviting artists who work in
a variety of media to demonstrate their portfolio of work and
interest in the project.
A panel of local stakeholders will select four artists who meet
the criteria and a consultation and vote by the public will decide
on the most popular artist. The chosen candidate will then be asked
to consult with the public about producing a design. The artist
will work in consultation with the panel to see the project through
to completion.
Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council's Cabinet
Member for Community & Partnerships said
"This is a positive approach to a community art project and we
are pleased that local people are helping to shape the look and
feel of their neighbourhood. The Council sees itself as a leading
community organisation and we are pleased to have orchestrated this
positive result for an important part of Kidderminster town
centre."
The new artwork is planned for completion by April
2011.
