Council signed up to 10:10 Campaign
Wyre Forest District Council is aiming to reduce the size of its
carbon footprint in 2010, after signing up to the global '10:10
.campaign.'
10:10 encourages individuals, businesses, schools and
organisations to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. So
far more than 85,000 people and organisations have signed up, from
Sara Cox and Sienna Miller to the London Underground and the new
coalition government.
Councillor Marcus Hart, Wyre Forest District Council's Cabinet
Member for Housing and Environmental Services, said,
"Signing up to 10:10 shows that we are serious about cutting our
carbon emissions. The improvements we are already making to achieve
this will be good for the environment, helping to tackle climate
change, and also make sense financially, by reducing our energy and
fuel bills."
Some of the Council's actions which are already underway
include:
- Introduction of home-working for some staff, which reduces the
need for them to travel.
- Replacement of old fleet vehicles with more fuel efficient
models.
- Improvements to buildings such as Kidderminster Town Hall,
which has new efficient lighting and is due to be draught-proofed
to further cut bills.
- IT improvements, including reducing the number of servers,
which will cut electricity use and reduce the need for energy
intensive air conditioning.
The council is also encouraging Wyre Forest residents to sign up
to 10:10. There are various schemes which can help households to
cut their own carbon, including:
- Making use of the new and improved recycling collections
- Cut price loft and cavity wall insulation for all. Call energy
advice centre 'Act On Energy' on 0800 988 2881 for free and
impartial advice.
- Grants for renewable energy systems such as solar water heating
are available through the council. Contact our Sustainability Team
on 01562 732572.
- Borrow an energy monitor from Kidderminster or Stourport
Library (£2.75 for 2 weeks).
