In Town without My Car
Motorists are being urged to leave their cars at home and take
part in ‘In Town Without My Car’ on Saturday 19th September.
The event is part of European Mobility Week which runs from 16-22nd
September. The aim of the day is to encourage people to leave
their car at home for a day and to make their journeys using more
sustainable transport such as walking, cycling, public transport or
car sharing.
Wyre Forest District Council has worked with the County Council and
other organisations to put on a special event in Kidderminster on
Saturday 19th September.
As part of the day local authorities are encouraged to open up town
centre streets for people to enjoy walking, cycling, on-street
entertainment and market stalls. Part of Worcester Street (from
Prospect Hill up to the old Magistrates Court) will be closed for
entertainment organised by the District Council.
There will be a ‘Bus Users Surgery’, so people can have their say
about local services and learn more about routes and
timetables. There will also be a chance to find out about bus
and train discount offers. Wyre Forest Cycle Forum will be
there to provide information about leisure and commuter cycling and
Spokes (a bike recycling organisation) will be raffling a bike.
Other entertainment includes a scooter rally, fashion show, pig
roast and creative workshops. The event starts at 11.00am and
the fun will continue into the evening as there will be live bands
playing at The Boars Head and Tap House from 6.00pm until
midnight. The bands include Test Pilots, The Misers and The
Humdrum Express.
Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet
Member for Housing and Environmental Services said,
“We all like to make life a little easier for ourselves and cars do
help. But most car users - and I am one of the worst culprits
- have been guilty of driving to the shops when we really could
have walked or taken the bus. Sadly, this attitude is not
only bad for our health but also adds to global warming. As a
society, we need to start making small changes, even if it’s just
leaving the car for one journey a week. It’s really not that
hard to make a difference - it just means using the bus, or cycling
or walking which has the added bonus of boosting fitness. The
Council’s 'In Town Without my Car' event has lots of ideas for
people to help change the way they make journeys.”
