Safer Internet Day 2010

Tuesday 9th February 2010 is European Safer Internet Day (SID10). The campaign is supported by countries throughout Europe and during the week, a range of activities will be taking place across the continent to help protect young people online.

The theme for SID10 is ‘Think Before You Post’ and the campaign hopes to make the whole week (from Monday 8th February to Friday 12th February 2010) a week of action in the UK. For further information about activities for SID please visit: http://www.saferinternetday.org/

The Worcestershire Safeguarding Children Board is hosting 2 presentations by Detective Superintendent Martin Lakeman, Head of Public Protection for West Mercia Police and a member of all four West Mercia Safeguarding Children Boards.

The presentation will focus on the use of the internet and how professionals and volunteers caring for, or working with children and young people can reduce the risks online for those children and young people in their care whilst becoming part of their online world.

Detective Superintendent Lakeman said:
"The internet is a fantastic place and is the primary means of communication for young people but just like water which has hidden dangers you need to know the safety rules to remain safe.  The presentation will focus on how to use the internet safely and reduce the risks online, the power of personal information, social networking sites and following this year's theme 'think b4 u post' how things can come back to haunt you years later."

Internet safety is a priority for all four of West Mercia Safeguarding Boards (Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin), and by attending this event you too can become an ambassador for internet safety and make a difference.

Tuesday 9th February 2010 from 3.00pm to 4.30pm at The Council Chamber, County Hall, Worcester. This session is for those working with children and young people in a voluntary or professional capacity and there is no need to book.

Thursday 11th February 2010 (Session 1 from 10.00am to 12.00noon and Session 2 from 2.00pm to 4.00pm) in the Lecture Theatre at West Mercia Police Headquarters. The sessions are also for professionals and volunteers working with children within school, health and children's services environments. Childnet International promotes the SMART message for online usage:

Keep SAFE by being careful not to give out personal information – such as your name, email, phone number, home address, or school name – to people who you don’t trust online.

MEETING someone who you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present.

ACCEPTING emails, instant messaging messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!

Someone online may be lying about who they are, and information you find on the internet may not be RELIABLE.

TELL your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried. You can report online abuse to the police at: http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/.
