What is Council tax and how is it spent?

Council tax is a charge on residential properties and is used, together with Government grants, to fund public services for residents.

The council tax you pay is divided up across different bodies, the percentage each body gets is shown below:

We have complied the leaflet "Your services" pdf logo (1624K) to explain exactly how these percentages are spent.

How much do I have to pay?

Charges are applied depending on what band a property falls into. The bands are set by the Valuation Office. You can view your band and the bands of neighbouring properties on the Valuation Office website.

Charges are applied for a full financial year (1st April to 31st March).
