What is housing and council tax benefit?

Housing benefit and council tax benefit provide financial help for those on low incomes who rent their homes and/or who are also liable to pay council tax. They are national benefits but controlled by the local council. The amount paid depends on your household circumstances and income, you do not have to be in receipt of state benefit to qualify.

You can apply for housing benefit if you are in rented accommodation, including housing association or private rented. Payments do not meet all housing costs and you would be expected to pay for things like ultilities (such as gas, electricity, water etc), meals and so on.

There are 2 types of council tax benefit, one, ‘main scheme’ looks at your income and circumstances while the other, ‘second adult rebate’, looks at the circumstances of the second adult in your property only. If you could qualify for both we will work out which one will be the best value for you when you apply.
