Introduction to the Ranger Service

Welcome to the Wyre Forest District Council Ranger Service!
On the following pages you will be able to find out all sorts of information relating to the wildlife and nature reserves managed by the Ranger Service plus activities and events you can get involved in.

The Ranger Service has as important part to play in maintaining the natural environment to ensure the rare flora and fauna of our district will survive into the future.

The Ranger Service is staffed by a full-time Countryside and Conservation Officer, 2 Countryside Rangers and an Assistant Ranger.

Temporary Rangers are employed during the summer holidays to assist with the comprehensive summer activity programme organised by the Ranger Service. Volunteers are also an essential part of the Ranger Service.

The Ranger Service was established within the Wyre Forest District Council in 1991 with the aims:-
  • To manage the nature reserves and natural open spaces of the District Council or their wildlife and to enhance the experience for those who visit them.
  • To provide an environmental education service to all aspects of the community of the Wyre Forest District.
  • To look for opportunities to enhance the natural environment of the district.
The above aims are met by:-
  • Forming effective partnerships with other organisations and government bodies the Ranger Service implements appropriate management works to meet or part meet the national or local biodiversity action plan objectives.
  • Working with other organisations and the local community to develop and implement strategies to improve the environment and infrastructure of the nature reserves.
  • Develop, implement and where appropriate form partnerships to implement an effective events/education program. To effectively raise the awareness of the importance and significance of the natural environment.
Working with statutory organisations and other District and County Council departments, develop through planning, gain, mediation and by the provision of advice and support increase biodiversity gains throughout the district.

Wyre Forest District Council manages ten Local Nature Reserves, (LNR), and Sites of Special Scientific Interests, (SSSI). In order to maintain and protect wildlife the work of the Ranger Service aims to restore biodiversity of natural habitats and to protect our local wildlife for future generations.

This work is focused to part fulfil objectives laid out in the biodiversity plan for Worcestershire.

The reserves managed by the District Council include some of the most important Wetlands and Marshlands of the County and large area of the internationally rare lowland heath habitat.
